United3D and PC Pursuits

I have been involved with computers since high school but for me that started back in 1971 in a special Advanced Placement program called "Man-Made world". I took several college courses and by age 19, I was working for an up coming computer company called COMSYS (which later merged with the mainframe giant of the day Comten which was eventually purchased by NCR). I quickly learned everything I could about computers starting as a mainframe computer operator, quickly becoming a Fortran and COBOL programmer, and learning about the hardware, the operating systems, the applications, the data bases, the networks, and everything associated with computers (except perhaps the business and management aspects because they were not of much interest to me). Over the years I worked with a variety of Mainframe computers, Mini-computers, Servers, and PCs. I developed code and worked on the hardware in each of the environments. By the 1980's I discovered the BBS scene. WOW, in those days the BBS was king; you had games, files, message forums, chatting, and many cool things.

Eventually, by the early 1990's I was running my own BBS using products like PCBoard, POWERBBS, and Wildcat! I eventually stuck with Wildcat! which is now known as WINServer and I am running two BBS's at this point in time; one on my PC Pursuits server and the other on the United3D server to provide expanded functionality and games to the United3D community. The BBS offers both ANSI (telnet) and web browser access with lots of cool things (mostly games - a lot of which that I developed and maintain, e.g., Bingo4U, Cards4U, Scrabble4U, Number4U, and WAR4U). The main company that I own, PC Pursuits, runs on the same server where WINServer hosts the web site for my company. Note, this is above and beyond my full-time job as a Sr. Systems Engineer with a major defense contractor.

One thing that has always appealed to me and seems to be ever so popular was interactive 3D worlds a.k.a. virtual reality. Places where people could chat, meet, interact, play games, build communities, and so forth in a 3d world where they actually had a visual representation of themselves to interact in the online world. This desire gave birth to United3D but it took a while for it to get here for me. From a technology stand point many thought Virtual Reality (VR) would explode and be every where by the late 1990's but the lack of affordable and readily available broadband Internet access slowed things down. So I invested LOTS of time and energy into reviving BBS's, and trying to make them popular again but various things got in the way.

Today people have many online 3D interactive options with MORPG subscription gaming sites to community building sites like this one. This site is FREE and always will be FREE just like my BBS's. United3D is still in its infancy and will be growing, evolving and changing over time. One day I hope for it to be filled with dozens if not hundreds of worlds ranging from the sci-fi/futuristic to real life worlds loaded with beautiful scenery of mountains, beaches, and islands.

Feel free to join me in this dream, this adventure and building this vision. It will then become our shared vision, Our Pursuit of Happiness in 3D...
